An ex-fashion model of the top class who was 5'10'' tall, Carey was a favorite with the top American fashion designers like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Her father, an accomplished scientist who received the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists 1979 Scientist of Year award, is a renowned geoscientist. Carey traveled all over due to her father's work. When she finished her studies at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, she began modeling on the side. It caught the attention of an agent at Ford Model Agency New York. She lived in France for a short time, including Paris and Bordeaux. After that, she came back to New York for her college study and further to build her career as a model. As she modeled as she studied full-time for a literature major within New York University. Her interest grew in acting and began training at the Neighborhood Playhouse of New York. Her debut as an actor was as a character alongside Robin Williams in the 1986 film 'Club Paradise. She is a rock climber as well as skiing and windsurfing.
